Site Closing Down

Hi all,

Inception Hosting have been good enough to host this the site for free for years (we had to buy the SSL certs and Domain), but they are shutting down the shared packages shortly so we'll be closing down.

Brett (Boomsling) got this mail this morning.

Good Afternoon,

I hope you are well.

This email is to let you know we will be discontinuing certain shared hosting plans in the not-to-distant future and the plan you are on is one of those.

As you are on an unpaid plan we are giving you 2 months notice to give you time to migrate or move the service or let us know that it is no longer required.

The service will terminate on the 30th of December 2023, please ensure you have all data backed up before then if required, after termination recovery will not be possible.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer any changes or migrations and at this time we are not offering new shared hosting accounts.

Thank you for your understanding and I hope the service has been enjoyed for the years active.

By the way, once the relevant details are provided, Prostack will take care of everything i.e the migration.
I'm not an expert on that side, but all admins etc would of course stay the same.

We could "migrate" the site to a Discord server. Similar categories, but much less formal and still free.

It even has voice chat capability for weekend drunken ramblings - it might even break out into a game of something eventually....

Why did we all lose interest in this forum? Is it because we now use other channels?
I run another forum which is for expats in Argentina and yes, it can be a challenge to keep it moving. However, after several years of plugging away, we do have a lively core of posters and not just on local topics either.
My offer still stands if Boomsling is interested.

The Domain expires on the 12 of January 2024, so feel free to purchase it if you want, but GDPR means we can't just migrate the site over wholesale to another party.

I think it's one of those things where there are so many apps out there to speak with people about anything and everything that the traditional forum is a dying breed.

Stuff like Reddit is basically just a global megaforum in app form.

I do only Reddit, but it's a bit shit. (Most of the Mods are arseholes, which is great because I don't need to be one of them and can be an arsehole on my own. 👍😊)

The advantages of small forums like this are that we're not exposed to the mob culture. I don't do Reddit either because it seems to be full of Walter Mitty keyboard wannabees. I do however leech useful info off it and have probably posted thrice in my life, when I could be arsed.
Other than my expats forum (cough), the other one I is the most is TechPowerUp which is well run and not full of arseholes. Some great hardware pics there as well, not to mention threads about games and related stuff.
Shame about the migration stuff...
