Title: Random Obs
Post by: Wooster on October 03, 2018, 08:27:06 PM
I see trailers for The Good Doctor on SKY every now and then.
I assume he's meant to be an autistic savant, but he sounds like the Thermian C/O from Galaxy Quest.

I watched the first series. It's quite good. They took the subject seriously within the entertainment remit. Sometimes there is an element of Dougie Howser MD.

Why are Syfy series so cheaply made? Some of their actors are okay but, wow, their CGI, settings and limited numbers of extras spoil what might have been a watchable programme.

I've noticed that myself.
Maybe we underestimate the cost of good CGI.

I used to watch QT but have gradually went off it over the last couple of decades as it sort of became more of the same.
Maybe that's why Dimbleby is retiring, he's sick of it as well.

People keep track of these shows though (like political train spotters ) and Phil Burton-Carledge is one of them (as an aside to his usual job of lecturer in sociology at Derby Uni), and he's about to publish a paper on the show which included this wee nugget:

Quote;
His [..Phil's] particular bugbear is the “almost total erasure of trade unionists”, while business representation maintains its presence. From 2010 until the end of the 17-18 season, trade unionists have appeared nine times in total; business, in 32 slots; and celebrities (novelists, actors, the arts) have had 55 slots. From 1979 until 1990, it was 51 slots, 65 slots, and 10 slots respectively.

As Phil points out, trade unions are the largest voluntary organisation in civil society, with a membership of six million – “but leading trade unionists combined have been on less than Nigel Farage” in the last decade.

I met David Dimbleby a year or two ago in Glasgow Airport, he's a very small fellow.

I gave up on it because of the audience. It's suppose to be balanced but I always found them biased in the extreme. And they normally have on the panel someone you couldn't pay me to listen to, so why suffer? I find something else to do.

The audience is cherry picked as well apparently.

Over the last  couple of weeks I've watched a handful of Last of the Summer Wine. It began with the last few episodes of the whole series before it ended, and began again a generation ago with S1/Ep1. What a difference. The newer programmes were dreamily gentle with nothing much said and mostly three ancient guys wandering about. The start, however, was much sharper. What Cleggy said about his ex-wife would never have been allowed these days! Great fun.
I used to love it back then, but of course everything runs its course, like The Simpsons, which I haven't watched regularly for years.

I watched the last episode of S6 of Elementary. Different. For a while most thought the series would finish with this but no, S7 will be aired in the UK next Spring. The two of them were photographed filming a scene in Trafalgar Square.

Tonight's Dr Who was very good, if a bit tautological. Some good writing. I think we'll see the villain again.

Arrow, S7 Ep1 was one of the best I've watched in ages. I didn't really think much of the whole of S6. Confusing, depressing and fairly pointless.

Is he still using the elastic band bowstring?

Ever tried drawing the string on a modern hunting bow? It's extremely heavy....none of that Cupid 'thumb & finger' shit.

Channel 5: How to get a good night's sleep

I've done some swing shift jobs over the last few days.
Monday: 13:00 - 18:00
Tuesday: 08:00 - 10:00 then 17:00 - 23:00
Wednesday (today): 04:00 - 10:00

Here's the weird thing:
I set my 03:45 alarm (for this morning) yesterday afternoon and woke up 3 minutes before the alarm went off, after about 4hrs sleep.

This waking up a few minutes before the alarm clock goes happens quite a lot.
Sometimes I don't even know what day of the week it is or the date.

Maybe I'm semi conscious....not fully sleeping. :lipsrsealed:

Happens to me a lot too, though I normally only have to set my alarm twice a week.

I very rarely have to set mine either, I avoid these early jobs (and nightshifts as a rule) now that I work for myself, but I've very rarely slept in for work since I started at 16  (been unconscious a few times..... bit different.)

The McLaren Speedtail. I weep that I'll never get to even see one. I weep further that I'll never get to sit in one, and as for the utterly impossible chance of have a little drive, that saddens me enormously. Still, the fact it exists in reality is a joy.

I don't like that at all, it gives me the heebies.

They should call it the McLaren Prolapse.

Looks like Apu is due to be axed from The Simpsons because he's a 'hurtful' stereotype.

Looks like an opportunity for Groundskeeper Willy to take over the Kwik-E-Mart.

https://www.thenational.scot/news/17375809.scots-are-more-likely-to-not-pay-bbc-licence-fee-than-rest-of-the-uk/

Scotland has overtaken Northern Ireland for not paying the telly tax.
It wasn't always that way, but something happened in 2014 that has led to to significant disillusionment with the service in subsequent years.

Unfortunately it looks like they'll try and tighten the screws in England and Wales to make up for the shortfall.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6617471/BBC-crack-people-dont-pay-150-TV-licence-fee.html

Although the article doesn't explicitly mention it, there are communities in NI where they won't even try to collect and the worst they can do in Scotland is send someone to your door to make enquiries (and you can take out a restraining order to stop them if they pester you).

Imagine if SKY or Netflix came knocking at your door to demand payment for services you don't use.

Remember James Burke?
Remember (if you're old enough), his excellent science series Connections? (3 of)

He's still alive.
I caught him on Radio 4 the other day doing a 15 minute bit before 10am on the station.

Why hasn't he done, or been invited to do another series since 1997?

Anyway..quite a few are online

Brilliant stuff.

I discovered Shakespeare and Hathaway, a gentle, funny, buddy private investigator series based, actually I don't know. Round London but not in it. It's on Catch Up.

I have a thing about dogs.
.. in that they have to be dog shaped, be able to breath normally and not so inbred that they're internal organs and bones are so distorted, weak, and out of shape that they'd classify as a type of shark.
Title: Re: Random Obs
Post by: Glamdring on March 11, 2019, 11:44:14 AM
This is why the Beeb stopped showing Crufts. There was quite a fuss several years ago about the sort of deformities bred into some dog breeds, so they gave up the rights and C4 didn't have the same qualms.

My sister has a standard poodle. Lovely animal, perfectly dog shaped and designed as a retriever. Yet they have, he has, congenital hip problems that cause him trouble sometimes, and will only grow worse as he grows older. Not something you can see outwardly.

I signed up for a trial IPTV service...you know the ones, every channel everywhere.

Too much shit (and a lot of it is shit) and an EPG that takes half an hour to browse.
(Quality is improving as the bandwidth increases though, only a few years ago it was grainy garbage.)

Still, for about £50 a year it certainly beats some of the more traditional suppliers (who are actually paying for the stuff the IPTV vendors resell), so you can see the attraction.
...overpaying maybe.

I have no interest in the EPL, but I recall some daft cunts paid over £5Bn for the rights in 2015, then charged their customers for the privilege, even if they didn't get the package that showed the games.
So if IPTV sees football players wages approaching normality, then I'd say I'm all for it.  :cheesy:

Not watching it, but on a browse by I saw that Channel 5 have a programme on called, Eamonn and Ruth: How the other half lives.

It isn't though, is it?

The median income in the UK is around £28,000.
I make more than that and they didn't pop round to see how I live.

Clowns will watch that though and never realise it should be called Eamonn and Ruth: How the richest 2% lives.
It's a long way from half.

I just watched Reprisal. Not that good. The good guy and bad guy were so close in appearance I had real trouble in working who was doing what, and was it deliberate in terms of plot.

I wonder what I was on about there ^^^, probably all the programmes (usually US in origin) that feature gun use.

Anyhoozles.
Travel Man: 48 Hours in Athens

They have those wee fish that eat dead skin off your feet, or more, depending on how far in you go.
But...if you go to Mallaig* and stop off at the (rather short) river Morar and lie in the shallows just off the beach, the tiny prawn do the same thing rather more effectively (one fish = one mouth, but one tiny prawn = two precise wee claws) that could probably have a decent stab at skintags, if you have any.  :azn:

I wouldn't fall asleep though, they could probably make some serious inroads on your internal organs in a few hours.  :cheesy:

*any small river outlet up the West Coast would probably do.

Don't watch it.

As previously mentioned, any show that needs to explain the basic plot during the intro, on every episode, isn't worth bothering about.
It's obviously made for people who need to be reminded what the basic plot is, every episode.

I'm not overly impressed with the last season of GoT, it all feels a bit rushed and basic.

I recall when everyone was raving about The Beach by Alex Garland, which was excellent for most of the book, but by the end you got the feeling he just wanted shot of it for publication and just slapped down any old shit (figuratively speaking) to end it.

(I didn't watch Lost beyond a couple of episodes, but I hear that went the same way in the end)
Title: Re: Random Obs
Post by: Glamdring on May 18, 2019, 11:28:26 AM
Lost lasted 5 series IIRC. The first two were very good but quickly thereafter it tumbled, I gave in, and I only watched the final episode out of curiosity. They just gave in and none of it made the slightest sense.
