Series three of El Chapo in 4k UHD.
This is a very well made series, in Spanish of course with English subtitles and wow, how it opened my eyes about what's been happening in Mexico over the years.

Currently watching Ep5 of The Discovery of Witches. It's very much not for teens. A touch slow maybe. The sets/locations are great. Acting is good.

Condor, on Universal. S1 Ep1. If they haven't used up all their good ideas in the first three episodes it could be good.

Tin Star is on Council TV (Channel 4) on Sunday nights (started last week)

I liked the first ep and it seems pretty good.

You watched it on premium Glam, is it worth keeping up with?

Tin Star is fierce and unforgiving. Zero humour and it's hard to know who to root for, but it is quality drama.

Didn't enjoy last Sunday's Dr Who. There was just so much wrong with it in historical terms. James would never, ever, ever be alone, without servants and guards, ect. He'd never be able to escape them. And he'd never leave the court unattended in case he found himself not in power when he returned.

The latest season of House of Cards (without Spacey) was weird and it felt like all the actors were on drugs.
It really was quite dire and the writers simply could nit let go of the Frank Underwood spectre. He was everywhere, when they should have moved on.

The full rewrite probably mucked it up.
The same thing happened with the second season of Goliath....which got chopped up and reworked as well.

I watched Frozen again. I think it has all the class of the early Disney cartoons. Some dark parts to it and bits that weren't explained, but it's Disney, not Dickens.

Line of Duty is a great police drama, but for some odd reason Netflix is only showing seasons 3 and 4, in our area anyway.
Gripping stuff, especially The Caddy, who really is a cad.

Monsters Inc. because it was on the telly. Still one of the best animated films.

Yes it is, though it's remarkable how much the CGI has improved by the time Monsters University came out. I thought that one silly and didn't finish it.

Watched The Avengers: Infinity Wars tonight. How complex. I'd no idea what was happening and it's really only part one of a longer story. I'll have to watch it again. The actors are really ageing since the first Iron Man came out.

Complex?
As many superheroes as they could squeeze in come together to stop Thanos getting his power-ups, is pretty much what it boils down to.
There's not much complexity beyond that.
(There's probably a directors cut in the offing with another half hour or more of scenes they couldn't fit in.)

Watching the Royal Institute Christmas Lectures
Yup, I know it's for kids but I've always liked them and it's better than half the adult orientated shit that's on.

Something does confuse me though.  This episode is about DNA, common ancestors therefore evolution etc. Then why is the Royal Institute still royal? Aren't the royals defenders of the faith, the monarch the head of the CofE and god's representative?
Sometimes I over think shit.

Outlander is pretty good with some interesting Scottish history and beautiful scenery. Plenty of bodice busting outfits, frequent use of the word sassenach and some very unsavoury British soldiers.
It's a cool idea to transport someone from 1945 to 1741 and just imagine knowing what you would know now about the Jacobite rebellion, just before the battle of Culloden.
Would you warn anyone in order to change the course of history?

Great British Car Journeys. A three part series with Christopher Timothy and Peter Davidson. Ep1 was the Highlands of Scotland. Quite entertaining. They're using an old Morgan 4-4. The single lane roads look great.

Tried watching a bit of Curfew on Sky 1 last night (they made a big deal about it), but it was like watching one of those old Adam West Batman shows from the 60's

They actually used the ancient 'technique' of speeding up some of the car scenes to make them look more dramatic...but it just looked a bit sad and low budget,  amateurish by today's standards.

Tbh, it was amateurish by 60's standards.

S2 of Siren is good enjoying it, have given up on the walking dead, fear the walking dead and the arrow, they just going on far to long!
Gotham is on series 5 which is to be the last and is the best series by far! shame its finishing but there is talk of it continuing as films which would be good as its good to see all the characters get older

Trying to watch Season 2 of American Gods, but they're stretching it out like fuck already.
Lots and lots of slow motion, 'emotive' scenes where a whole song plays and piles of dream sequency shit that does nothing to move the story on...quite the deliberately opposite tbh.

So, gone right off it after 2.5 episodes.
(btw, I was watching Tin Star...and that's kind of the same and I found myself fast forwarding my way through that as well.)

Ah well, it's not like there's a shortage of TV these days.

Arrow has become a soap opera. Totally lost it.
Title: Re: What are you watching?

Supergirl really has lost it.  All the bad guys are way better than the good guys  who haven't a clue what they're doing. And the plot,  such as it is,  is so convoluted as to be meaningless.

Se2 Ep1 is post carnage....getting a bit sick of it tbh, they must have a contract with Fabrique Nationale in Belgium to punt bright red P90's.
Not much in the way of storyline, just another advert for some shitty guns.

Doom Patrol is a bit of old pants.

I gave it a chance until Crazy Jane turned up and someone explained that she had 64 different personalities, each with a different superpower (fuck me.. ), then later Doctor X Dr. Niles Caulder beseeches them that they are his 'greatest achievements'.
As far as I could tell he cobbled together Robotman and has a big house.
The rest of them all suffered their fates accidentally (a la not very Fantastic Four), so where's the 'achievements'?

Standard fayre tbh
Dr Cripple, Strong Guy, Rubber Woman, Energy Bloke and Convenience Girl

Well that's me watched all of Chernobyl, fuck me what a series, among the best ever made imo.

..and underneath it all, it keeps hitting you that it actually happened, these people suffered and sacrificed themselves (sometimes knowingly, in many cases not) to control a disaster that could have affected millions and rendered vast areas of Europe uninhabitable.

My favourite moment, perhaps of any US sitcom, is the middle (well, third) brother being flummoxed when trying to come up with an offensive nickname for the girl terrorising Dewey at school. She was called Regina Tucker.

Walter White was only ever Hal to me too.

Did you stick through the series? I thought parts of it were excellent and Garth Ennis was a great writer in 2000AD back in the day. The dark humour in it was right up my street, particularly the dolphin rescue and the baby laboratory.

Ep1 of Carnival Row on Prime was quite good, though it was filmed almost entirely in the dark so nobody could see what was happening and the CGI would cost less.

Carnival Row, Prime. Still good, sort of but the background is always filmed in almost pitch dark or by oil lamp, and I've no idea about the characters. Who are they and why are they in the city, and what are the issues? A few hints are given but not enough.

I finally got round to having a go at Fleabag. I enjoyed Ep1. It was smart and funny. Then in Ep2 it turned out she was everything I don't like in people. A taker. I'd prefer her sister. I turned it off after ten minutes and that'll do for me.
Title: Re: What are you watching?
Post by: Sacked Matt on September 30, 2019, 03:17:38 PM
To be fair, I am not sure you're supposed to like Fleabag especially with a name like that - there are, however, far worse characters than her and she doesn't really get away with everything.

There is another sitcom that just started on the BBC, Defending the Guilty. I was going to recommend it, although with the warning that the character played by the lady from the IT Crowd is, if the first three episodes are representative, an irredeemable taker - although as the characters are lawyers that was probably inevitable.

His Dark Materials was excellent yesterday. It instantly felt like a much better adaptation of the book than the film and I am confident it won't need to substitute in the "happy" ending. It was a little bit of a shame that they had to start with text explaining the concept of daemons however I doubt that it would have made much sense to anyone that hadn't read the books otherwise - slowly establishing how they worked in the books was such a pleasure.

The third book is going to be really difficult to make. It is just an incredible piece of writing with the scale of its settings, the sheer outlandishness of various ideas and so much emotional punch. The effort put in to this first episode suggests that they will try their very hardest to do a good job with it when the time comes anyway.

I'm not a huge fan of teen fiction, but The Golden Compass was a passable watch.

No I won't, I don't subscribe to BBC any more (thought it was on Netflix or Prime).

Monzon is a surprisingly good Argentine series about the famous world champion boxer who was arrested for the murder of his wife.
The investigation is fascinating, not least the interested parties, the twists and turns and the whole is interwoven with how he reached the very top in boxing from humble beginnings.
It's subtitled, but not sure about dubbed.

We don't take to dubbing here. Many Continental countries do, but not the UK. I've not seen that advertised.

I note Supergirl is fuller in the face in this series. She's grown up but the plot is poor, the action amateurish. Time I stopped watching.

Agreed. Dubbing is horrible and loses the entire essence of the series or film.
I'm watching it with English subtitles, even though I can understand most of what they say.

Did it never occur to anyone at the BBC that The War of the Worlds has never really been done properly, to the original script?

No?

Bit of a mess this shit...so diluted by period drama and pointless backstories that it's barely recognisable.

I see that they chopped up and burned every swastika they used on the show.

Apparently it was every item of Nazi paraphernalia, not just the swastikas.

You should see the reviews on IMDB, most of which are shockingly bad.

One remake I'd like to see by HG Wells, would be The Time Machine and hopefully not screwed around with.

I gave it up after episode 2 was so dull and boring!

His Dark Materials is done much better, quite enjoying that up to episode 4 so far (one thing though is that i feel like i have seen it before?)

I quite liked that. The girl who plays Lyra in this latest version is too old. She looks about 14 but in the book is 11 or so

Watched episode 12 of My robot last night of season 4 I think it was the end of the whole show quite enjoyed it really.

Season 4 of the Expanse was top notch as expected, I also watched Carnival Row on amazon Prime and thoroughly enjoyed it
The Witcher was very good to didnt have a clue about the story as hadn't played the games or read the books but it was good.

Currently on season 2 of Lost in Space which is okish but not as good as the three mentioned above.

BBC adaptation of Dracula is different almost finished the first episode and i also enjoyed Dr Who on new years day

You can tell i was ill all over Christmas and New Year!

I kept falling asleep during The Witcher episodes, got as far as the episode with the dwarf who has a Scottish accent as bad as Scotty from Star Trek and gave up. (I was already bored of it and he did my nut in.)  :cheesy:

Star Trek Discovery. Taken me some time to get used to, but I’m getting there

Bit confused how they are more advanced than TOS, but it has something to do with some timeline

Picard on Prime started well, but he's the main attraction, so we'll see how it goes.
