Title: MS and 1809
Post by: Glamdring on October 07, 2018, 06:27:28 PM
As you'll all know 1809 is the big October Windows Update. It's been put on hold because an increasing number of people are finding all their data is being wiped from My Documents/Photos/Music. One guy lost 220GB.
Seems a bit error to miss when you've have millions of beta testers...
Don't install.

I don't actually  use those folders but I see that some people have seen full user accounts vanishing, so good heads up.

Apparently there's a fix for the problem. People tearing their hairs out for this.

Though I still haven't receive my update to 1809, a week on......meh, maybe it's because of the slow shitty internet I have at the moment. Hopefully due on the 11th

They stopped issuing it until they've got a proper fix.

I've paused all my Windows updates until next month.

I think I have all mine deferred by default.

MS have fixed it and are starting to reissue it. Back-up My Docs/etc anyway.
The problem came because a lot of beta testers move My Docs to a D: drive so when they reinstall, as they do a lot so as not  to have to move data around. Windows, when running Clean Disk by default, did not include My Docs, but 1809 did, which the testers missed. Most of them. The new Clean Disk saw My Docs on D: and left it, but deleted it on C: including any data, which normal users still use, so it was us ordinary folk that got hit.
MS knew about this from months ago but even most of their secondary beta testers use D: so it didn't flag as anything other than an isolated case. What they don't have are normal user beta testers who leave everything as default. They'd have spotted it fast enough.

I’ll have to wait until the new internet is up and running

I have backed up to a NAS drive a couple of months ago, most of the most important stuff, since I have 2tb, I’m going to detach the rwo drives I have stored my photos, coming in at a whacking great 2tb per drive

I can only assume they are testing it with beta, because they haven't released it yet

Even the new Ubuntu distro has been released

No, they released it all right, except it wasn't all right if you remember my posts on the old forum. There was a bug that deleted some people's My Documents folder under particular circumstances that beta testers didn't discover because they usually don't use My Documents.
MS withdrew the update and have fixed the bug.
It's back with the beta testers and I imagine it'll be released again when they've approved it.

I meant the update with the fix. I assume those who signed to techinsiders are the ones with the beta

No idea. I believe that there are main and secondary beta testers. What they needed so this didn't happen was a gang of normal people on normal rigs doing normal stuff to test it. This problem would have popped up very quickly.
The thing is that the beta testers reinstall Windows often, so rather than having to swap data back and forth they swap My Docs, etc, to their D: drive, installing on C: of course. The update didn't affect the D: drive so it wasn't spotted.

As a rule, it's probably a bad idea to keep any essential files in the default locations.

Some were complaining that it did pop up early, just Microsoft didn't pick up any feedback from the feedback hub, which makes me wonder what's the point of it if they don't read the comments from feedback?

They had bother with the Creators Update too. Apple has bother. OS's are so complex these days, trying to be all things to all people.

At least they have found a fix for the problem of the archive bug.

Pinning for an early November release I guess as the rumours suggest

I just had an update myself, but it was only deferred updates for Adobe and a cumulative update from October.
My base build is still 1803.
