News / Brexit 1.01
« on: October 19, 2018, 10:45:00 AM »
Trying to get my head around what's currently going on.

17.4m voted to leave
16.1m voted to stay

England voted to leave
Wales voted to leave
Scotland voted to remain
Northern Ireland voted to remain
Gibraltar and IoM voted to remain

We're still negotiating the 'how we are going to leave' part, not the trade deal part yet

The 'Backstop'
If I get this right....

The backstop is designed to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic while the next part (the actual trade deal) is going on, because almost everyone involved thinks it'll take far more time than we have allocated
The DUP hate this idea because if the trade talks fail and the Backstop is still in place, it moves the NI border into the Irish Sea/Firth of Clyde, essentially distancing NI from the rest of the UK

And....when we eventually move onto the actual trade talks

Of the 17.4m who voted to leave (and this appears to be the biggest problem of all)
Some want a hard 'WTO rules/no deal' Brexit
Some want a Canada+ (++ or Super Canada, depending on who's saying it) deal
Some want an EFTA (Norway) type deal (as do some of those who voted to remain, as a compromise position)

Is that about right?

-edit- Maybe we need another referendum with four questions on the ballot.

(Do you want:)
1: No Deal
2: A Canada+ Deal
3: A EFTA Deal
4: To Remain

...at least we'd know.

News / Legal Weed: Uruguay and now Canada

I wonder how this will pan out.

I think it's sensible myself, given I have my suspicions about the high THC strains available these days possibly contributing to higher suicide levels and increased rates of depression among users.
I'm not sure if there's any evidence of that as yet, but the new 'green' hasn't been like the old 'green' for about 20 years. (It's like a herbal cosh if you're not used to it)
ftr: I never really liked Grass, Paki/Afghani Black was the apex as far as I'm concerned, given it was a blended resin of three buddings....those farmers knew how to make a consistently quality product.

So....higher potency = higher market value, initially and then it becomes commonplace.
I know for a fact that there's an increasing market for the old school resins and legalising the stuff could at least ensure the quality and strength of the product (keeping it within limits and unadulterated), so where's the harm?

Blood and Thunder political types is the problem...don't do this, don't do that, punish the different and all that shite.
Weird thing is, they're usually the first ones up on the soap box to decry the 'Nanny State'.

PC / Spare Screw
« on: October 11, 2018, 08:39:41 PM »
Just stripped down the old laptop to fix an intermittent HDD detection issue (fuzz on some contacts I reckon) but I've ended up with the ubiquitous spare screw.  :azn:

I triple checked and have no idea where it's meant to go, but it fell out of the top cover when I removed it, so I'll have to assume it was dropped in there during assembly.  .....that's what I'd tell the punters anyway.  :cheesy:

News / Generalities
« on: October 10, 2018, 08:28:02 PM »
I was genuinely surprised at something the other day.
I recall Richie's housing problem and the rent levels he has to pay .

Scotland have built more council houses since 2013 than England has, despite being 1/10th of the population.
It's so surprising that even The Sun felt fit to report it (very briefly): https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/7457338/snp-nicola-sturgeon-council-houses/

This is not a political dig, but the mismatch is dramatic.
Why can we finance a tenfold council house build than England can manage?
Something isn't right.

These aren't Tory 'affordable housing' that you need to get a (£100k+) mortgage for I think, they seem to be  genuine council houses.

News / Dispatches: Lawless England?
« on: October 08, 2018, 09:38:37 PM »
4 out of 5 car thefts in West Yorkshire are ignored completely by the police?

These figures are pretty shocking across the board.

Investigating cybercrime (which is normally used as an excuse by government) involves people sitting at desks, so the equipment costs are cheap.
No cars, no vans, radio's, cells, patrols...etc and so on.
It's also investigating crimes that the banks and anyone involved in financial transactions should be preventing themselves (...Tesco).

The real title of the programme is Lawless Britain, but they only reported on crime figures and practices employed by forces in England, so it's not, is it?
(Unless they have a follow up programme scheduled.)

-edit- I think they have a habit of doing this. I'm sure I've made a complaint about it before.  (Which might account for me rarely watching it)

General Technical / New Gmail (Browser)
« on: October 05, 2018, 09:43:29 PM »
They updated the Gmail browser client and it was hideously slow, but the option was there to revert back to the old version.

Now they've removed the option to go back and users are stuck with the hideously slow version forever.

Maybe it's something to do with the new GDPR policies, so they've added stuff to get around it....like predictive replies that will allow them to scour your previous emails in order to make some useless and entirely unnecessary suggestions.

I might even fire up Outlook and configure it for my various accounts.

That's how bad it is, bloat is preferable to lag.

I see trailers for The Good Doctor on SKY every now and then.
I assume he's meant to be an autistic savant, but he sounds like the Thermian C/O from Galaxy Quest.

Site News / What happened
« on: October 02, 2018, 08:50:32 AM »
The old boards database got corrupted at some point in the last year or so, possibly leading to the site slow downs and outages.
When we attempted to repair it, we lost it completely.
(The backups only contained a memberlist of a few regulars and about 50 old spam accounts)
